Buy now, pay later and rent-to-own

Splitting a purchase into small payments can feel easy and safe. But buy now, pay later plans can bring late fees and overdrafts if payments are pulled automatically, and rent-to-own deals can cost far more in total than buying the item outright. Knowing the full cost before you agree helps you decide if it is worth it.

Common problems to watch for

  • Showing only the small payment, not the total you will pay
  • Automatic payments that can overdraw your bank account
  • Late fees when a payment is missed or a card on file fails
  • Several pay-later plans at once that become hard to track
  • Rent-to-own totals far higher than the store's regular price

Had one of these happen? Telling others what you were charged helps them avoid it.

What fair pricing looks like

A fair payment plan shows the full total, every fee and the due dates before you agree. If the total is well above the regular cash price, you are paying a lot for time.

Before you pay

  • Ask for the total cost, including all fees, in writing
  • Compare that total with the item's regular cash price
  • Check what happens if a payment is late or fails
  • Make sure each payment date fits your paycheck schedule
  • Count all the pay-later plans you already have going

How to cancel

  1. Returning an item does not always stop pay-later payments right away; contact the plan provider and keep paying until the refund posts.
  2. Use the plan provider's official app or website to see balances and payoff options.
  3. For rent-to-own, read the agreement for how to return the item and end payments.
  4. Ask whether paying off early lowers your total cost, and get the payoff amount in writing.

Common questions

Is buy now, pay later really interest-free?

Some plans charge no interest if every payment is made on time, but late fees can apply, and some longer plans do charge interest. Read the terms before agreeing. Also check that automatic payments will not overdraw your bank account, which could add bank fees.

How does rent-to-own differ from buying on credit?

With rent-to-own, you rent the item and usually do not own it until you make every payment or pay an early buyout amount. Adding up all the payments often shows a total well above the regular price. Ask for the total cost before you sign.

What if I return something I paid for with a pay-later plan?

Contact the store and the plan provider. Refunds can take time to reach your plan, and payments may still be due in the meantime. Keep paying until you see the refund applied, and save your return receipt. If there is a problem, you can file a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
