About Fair or Not

Some business practices are plainly unfair. Others depend on who you ask. This site lays out how each one works, the other side of the story, and the options people often aren’t told about, then lets you decide.

Fair or Not is a free consumer resource from AblePro, Inc. It covers six kinds of unfairness: what you’re charged, what happens after you buy, what you sign or click, who is really on your side, getting help, and what happens to your information. Each issue explains both sides, the options you may not be told about, and where to complain. Visitors vote “Fair” or “Not fair,” and anyone can share their own experience.

Why I built this

My mother was in her 80s when she passed away. Going through her accounts afterward, I found she was paying for more than 10 streaming subscriptions, most of them channels added through Amazon Prime Video.

She wasn’t careless. I don’t believe she ever meant to sign up for that many. But the way these offers work makes it easy: you pick a show, it offers a “free trial” of a channel, and a single click starts it using the card already on file. When the trial ends, the monthly charge begins. Each one is only a few dollars, and they show up on a statement as Amazon charges, so they blend in with everything else.

I’ve worked in technology for most of my career, so I was able to track them all down and cancel them. But it took real digging, and most families wouldn’t know where to look.

I don’t think my mother was unusual. I think this happens to a lot of people, especially older adults, and many families never find out. That’s why I built this site: so people can see where these charges hide, share what happened to them, and help others catch it sooner.
