Amazon Prime Video Channels: free trials, surprise charges and how to cancel

Inside Prime Video you can start free trials of dozens of other streaming services with a click. Each one becomes its own monthly charge if it isn’t cancelled — and it’s easy to end up paying for several without realizing it.

From our founder: “When my mother passed away in her 80s, I found more than 10 streaming subscriptions on her accounts, most of them Prime Video Channels. I work in technology and it still took real digging to find and cancel them all.” Read the full story →

How channel free trials turn into charges

  • Channels are other companies’ services sold through Prime Video. Movie, TV, kids, sports and specialty services can be added to your Prime Video account and watched there, without a separate app.
  • Each channel is a separate monthly subscription charged to the payment method on your Amazon account, on top of anything else you pay Amazon. Some channels have more than one plan, such as with or without ads, and bundles are also sold.
  • Many start with a free trial — commonly 7 days, but length and eligibility vary by channel. If you don’t cancel before the trial ends, you’re typically charged the channel’s regular price, every month.
  • Starting one is quick; keeping track is not. A trial can begin from a single prompt while browsing, so it’s easy to collect several channels over time and forget they renew.
  • Prime isn’t required for channels in the US. Amazon says US customers can add channels with or without a Prime membership — so channel charges can continue even if someone never had, or no longer has, Prime.
Tip: when you start a trial, set a reminder right away with our free-trial reminder, a day or two before it ends.

Why season 1 is included but season 2 asks you to pay

Not everything on Prime Video is included with Prime. The company that owns a show or movie decides how it’s offered, so different seasons of the same show can be offered in different ways — one season included with Prime, the next only on a paid channel, or for rent or purchase. Amazon also says titles once included with Prime can later require payment if the owner changes its terms. For example, season 2 of one Amazon series was released first on a separate paid channel, with wider Prime availability planned later.

That’s why you can finish season 1 and then be offered a channel trial or a purchase for season 2. Before you press play or tap a button, check these markers:

  • Blue checkmark — included with your Prime membership.
  • Yellow shopping bag — costs extra: subscribe to a channel, rent or buy.
  • The service logo on the title shows where it’s available, such as Prime or a specific channel.

Also note: since January 2024, Prime Video in the US shows ads by default. Watching without ads is an extra paid option — renamed Prime Video Ultra in April 2026, priced at $4.99 a month (or $45.99 a year for annual Prime members) as of this writing.

How to see and cancel every channel

  1. On a computer, sign in at amazon.com, open Account & Lists, then Memberships & Subscriptions. This page lists Prime, every channel, and other recurring Amazon charges in one place. (In Prime Video you can also go to Account & Settings → Channels.)
  2. Next to each channel you don’t want, choose Cancel Channel (or Cancel subscription) and confirm. The confirmation shows the date access ends.
  3. In the Amazon Shopping app: open the menu → Your Account → Memberships & Subscriptions → choose the subscription → cancel.
  4. Bought on an iPhone, iPad or Apple TV? Some channel subscriptions started in the Prime Video app are billed by Apple. Cancel those in Settings → your name → Subscriptions, at least 24 hours before renewal.
  5. Not sure who bills it? Look at the bank or card statement. If the charge is from Apple or Google rather than Amazon, cancel in that store. Our statement scanner can list every repeating charge.

You keep access until the end of the paid period, and you won’t be charged again after that. Cancelling doesn’t refund charges already made; if you were charged for something you didn’t mean to start, ask Amazon customer service — and see our dispute guide.

Cancelling channels and subscriptions after someone dies

Subscriptions keep renewing and charging the card on file until someone cancels them, so it’s common to find many after a loved one passes. These steps can help:

  1. Gather a list first. Look through their bank and card statements for the last few months, or run them through the statement scanner. Check every place subscriptions hide, including Amazon, Apple, Google Play, Roku and PayPal.
  2. If you have legal authority and can sign in, go to Amazon’s Memberships & Subscriptions page and cancel each channel and Prime. Cancelling stops future charges; closing the account is a separate, permanent step that removes access to purchased digital content such as Kindle books and videos.
  3. If you can’t sign in, contact Amazon customer service and ask how to cancel subscriptions and close the account of a customer who has died. Have a copy of the death certificate and proof that you’re the executor or legal representative ready.
  4. Ask the bank or card issuer to stop recurring charges and to mark accounts closed because the account holder has died. Order several certified copies of the death certificate early — many companies ask for one.
  5. Protect their identity. A spouse or executor can notify a credit bureau and request a deceased alert; one bureau shares it with the others. Funeral homes usually report the death to Social Security.

Generally, a person’s debts are paid from their estate; family members usually don’t have to pay them with their own money unless they co-signed, shared the account, or state law requires it.

Common questions

Why am I being charged for channels on Amazon?

Each Prime Video channel, such as a premium movie or TV service, is its own monthly subscription billed by Amazon. Many start with a free trial, often 7 days, and then charge the regular price unless cancelled. Check Memberships & Subscriptions in your Amazon account to see every one.

Why does season 1 come with Prime but season 2 doesn’t?

The company that owns a show decides how each season is offered. One season can be included with Prime while another is only on a paid channel or for rent or purchase. Look for the blue checkmark (included with Prime) versus the yellow shopping bag (costs extra) before you press play.

Do I lose access right away when I cancel a channel?

No. Amazon says you keep access until the end of the period you already paid for, and you won’t be charged again after that. Cancelling does not refund charges already made.

How do I cancel channels for a parent who has died?

Sign in to their Amazon account if you have legal authority and access, go to Memberships & Subscriptions, and cancel each channel and Prime. If you can’t sign in, contact Amazon customer service, and ask the card issuer or bank to stop recurring charges. Our section below lists the steps.
