QR code and document scanner apps
QR codes are on menus, bills and parking meters, and many people download a scanner app to read them. Some of these apps lock basic scanning or saving PDFs behind a weekly subscription. Most modern phones can already scan QR codes with the camera and scan paper documents with a free app from the phone's maker. Here is what to watch for and what to try first.
Common problems to watch for
- A scanner that lets you scan, then charges before you can save or share the file
- A free trial that starts as soon as you tap 'Continue'
- Watermarks on scans unless you subscribe
- Paywalls hiding the small 'close' button
- QR apps that fill the screen with ads after every scan
Had one of these happen? Telling others what you were charged helps them avoid it.

What fair pricing looks like
QR scanning and basic document scanning are widely free on modern phones. Paying an ongoing fee usually only makes sense for heavy business use with special features you actually need.
Before you pay
- Try your phone's camera on a QR code before downloading anything
- Check whether Notes, Files or Google Drive can scan your document
- Read the price and billing period on the trial screen carefully
- Find out if saving or exporting is locked behind a paywall
- Ask yourself how often you really need to scan
How to cancel
- On iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, and cancel there. Deleting the app does not cancel it.
- On Android, open Google Play, tap your profile picture, then Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions, and cancel.
- Before cancelling, save any scans you need to your phone, email or cloud storage.
- Cancel before a trial ends; most trials renew automatically into a paid plan.

Common questions
Do I need an app to scan a QR code?
Usually not. iPhones read QR codes with the built-in Camera app, and many Android phones do the same in their camera app or with Google Lens. Point the camera at the code and tap the link that appears. Only open links you expect, since QR codes can lead to any website.
How can I scan a document to PDF for free?
On iPhone, the Notes and Files apps can scan paper documents and save them as PDFs. On Android or iPhone, Google's Drive app can also scan to PDF. Lay the page on a flat, well-lit surface, let the app find the edges, and save or share the finished file.
Are QR codes safe to scan?
Scanning a code is not harmful by itself, but the link can lead anywhere. Before opening it, look at the web address your phone shows. Be careful with codes stuck on top of other signs, such as parking meters, and never enter payment details on a site you did not expect.
