Do businesses have to show the total price?
For live-event tickets and short-term lodging, an FTC rule in effect since May 2025 requires the total price, including most mandatory fees, to be shown up front. Other industries may be covered by different rules or state laws. Our junk fees guide explains more.
What counts as a junk fee?
Generally, a mandatory fee that isn’t included in the advertised price, or a fee for little or no real service. Examples people often report include service, convenience, processing, resort and facility fees.
