AI chat and AI photo apps
Several major AI chat tools have free versions straight from the companies that make them. Many app stores also carry look-alike apps that borrow popular AI names, then ask for a weekly fee right away. AI photo apps can do the same with avatars and 'enhanced' selfies. This page explains the common tricks, where to find the official free versions, and how to cancel.
Common problems to watch for
- An app name or icon that looks like a famous AI tool but comes from a different developer
- A paywall before you can ask a single question, often with a weekly price
- A free trial that starts automatically when you tap 'Continue'
- AI photo packs or avatars sold one batch at a time, adding up quickly
- Asking you to upload many face photos without clearly explaining how they are stored or used
- Credits or 'tokens' that run out fast and push you to buy more
Had one of these happen? Telling others what you were charged helps them avoid it.

What fair pricing looks like
Basic AI chat is available free from several major makers, usually with daily or usage limits. A paid plan can be reasonable if you use it heavily, but a weekly fee for a look-alike app rarely makes sense.
Before you pay
- Check that the developer is the company that actually makes the AI tool.
- Try the maker's free version first to see if its limits are enough for you.
- Read the price and billing period. Weekly billing is a warning sign.
- Read what happens to photos you upload, especially photos of faces or children.
- Never type passwords, Social Security numbers or bank details into any AI chat.
How to cancel
- On iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, pick the app and tap Cancel Subscription.
- On Android, open Google Play, tap your profile icon, choose Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions, and cancel there.
- Deleting or uninstalling the app does not cancel the subscription. You must cancel in the store settings.
- If you subscribed on the maker's website instead, sign in there and cancel in account or billing settings.
- Check both app stores and your card statement if you tried more than one AI app.

Common questions
Is ChatGPT or Gemini free?
Both have free versions offered directly by their makers, OpenAI and Google, with usage limits. Microsoft Copilot also has a free version. Paid plans offer more use and extra features. If an app asks for payment before you can try anything, check the developer name. It may not be the official app.
Is it safe to upload my face to an AI photo app?
Be cautious. Read the app's privacy policy to see how long your photos are kept, whether they are used to train AI, and whether you can delete them. Avoid uploading photos of children or other people without permission. If the policy is unclear or missing, it is safer to skip the app.
I bought AI credits I did not use. Can I get a refund?
Sometimes. For purchases through the App Store or Google Play, you can request a refund through Apple or Google, and they decide each case. For purchases on a website, contact the company. Act quickly, explain what happened, and keep receipts. Refunds are not guaranteed, so cancel any renewing plan first.
