Translator apps

Translating a sign, a menu or a short conversation does not have to cost anything. iPhones include Apple's free Translate app, and Google offers its Translate app free on both iPhone and Android. Still, some translator apps lock basic features behind a weekly plan or a trial that renews automatically. This page shows common tricks, free options, and how to cancel.

Common problems to watch for

  • A free trial screen that appears before you can translate even one word
  • Voice or camera translation locked behind a weekly subscription
  • An app name and icon that look like a well-known free translator
  • Limits so tight, such as a few words a day, that you are pushed to upgrade
  • Offline translation sold as a paid extra when free tools already offer it

Had one of these happen? Telling others what you were charged helps them avoid it.

Free and low-cost alternatives

Apple Translate (iPhone)Apple's Translate app comes with iPhone. It translates typed text, speech and conversations, and you can download languages so it works without an internet connection.
Google TranslateGoogle's official Translate app is free on Android and iPhone. It translates text, speech and photos of signs or menus, and lets you download languages for offline use.
Camera text translation on your phoneNewer iPhones and many Android phones can translate text seen through the camera or in photos using built-in features, with no separate paid app.

What fair pricing looks like

Everyday text, voice and camera translation is widely free from phone and service makers. Paying makes more sense for professional needs, such as certified document translation by a qualified human translator.

Before you pay

  • Try Apple Translate or Google Translate for the same task first.
  • Check the developer name, not just the icon, before downloading.
  • Read the billing period on the payment screen. Weekly plans add up fast.
  • For legal or medical papers, ask whether you need a certified human translator instead.
  • Download offline languages before travel instead of paying for them.

How to cancel

  1. On iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, pick the app and tap Cancel Subscription.
  2. On Android, open Google Play, tap your profile icon, choose Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions, and cancel there.
  3. Deleting or uninstalling the app does not cancel the subscription. You must cancel in the store settings.
  4. If you started a trial for a trip, cancel as soon as you get home, before the trial turns into a paid plan.

Common questions

Can I translate without internet while traveling?

Yes, with free tools. Apple's Translate app and Google Translate both let you download languages ahead of time so basic translation works offline. Do this on Wi-Fi before you leave. Offline translation may be a little less complete than online, but it usually handles signs, menus and simple phrases well.

Is a free translator good enough for important documents?

Free apps are fine for travel and everyday use, but they can make mistakes. For legal, immigration, medical or court papers, the office asking for the document may require a certified translation by a qualified person. Ask that office what they accept before paying any app or service.

How do I tell a real translator app from a copycat?

Look at the developer name on the app store page, not just the icon or title. Apple's Translate comes from Apple, and Google Translate is listed under Google. Copycat apps may use similar names and colors. Also check the in-app purchase list and recent reviews for complaints about weekly charges.
