Website, domain and hosting renewals

Websites, domain names and hosting are often sold with a low first-year price. The renewal can cost much more, and extras like privacy, email or backups may be added at checkout. Small businesses and families can lose a domain they rely on if renewal reminders go to an old email address.

Common problems to watch for

  • A low first-year price that renews at a much higher rate
  • Multi-year prepay required to get the advertised price
  • Add-ons pre-selected at checkout, such as backups or security tools
  • Auto-renewal turned on by default for every product
  • Making it hard to move your domain to another company
  • Look-alike renewal notices from other companies that aren't your current provider

Had one of these happen? Telling others what you were charged helps them avoid it.

What fair pricing looks like

A fair offer shows the renewal price, not only the first-year price. Compare total cost over several years and turn off add-ons you don't need.

Before you pay

  • Find the renewal price, not just the first-year deal
  • Uncheck add-ons you didn't ask for at checkout
  • Make sure your account email is one you check often
  • Ask how to move your domain to another company later
  • Check whether a free business profile meets your needs

How to cancel

  1. Sign in to your account and turn off auto-renew for each domain or plan you don't want.
  2. Before cancelling hosting, download a backup of your website files and email.
  3. To move a domain, ask your current provider for the transfer steps and code.
  4. Ignore renewal letters from companies you don't do business with; check your own account instead.

Common questions

Will I get a warning before my domain expires?

Under ICANN's Expired Registration Recovery Policy, registrars must send reminders about one month and about one week before expiration. Those go to the email on your domain record, so keep it current. If you miss them, act fast, since domains can sometimes be restored for a time after expiring.

Why is my renewal so much higher than what I first paid?

Many providers offer a low introductory price for the first term, then charge a regular rate after that. Look for the renewal price before buying. When renewal time comes, compare it with other providers, since you can usually move a domain or website.

I got a renewal notice from a company I don't recognize. Should I pay?

Be careful. Some mailers look like bills but are offers to switch your domain to a new company. Check who your current provider is by signing in to your account. Only pay renewals through the company that actually manages your domain.
